Mental Health Services

Attalla City Schools is committed to supporting all aspects of our students’ development. While academic success is a priority, we also focus on fostering meaningful connections and creating a safe, inclusive environment. Maintaining good mental health and well-being is vital to achieving success in all areas of life. By prioritizing mental health, we build resilience, focus, and a positive mindset—essential qualities for overcoming challenges and reaching goals. Caring for our mental well-being allows us to perform at our best, stay motivated, and maintain a healthy balance between work, relationships, and self-care. True success begins with a strong foundation of mental health.

What is Mental Health ?

Mental health refers to a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how individuals think, feel, and act, as well as how they handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Good mental health helps people realize their full potential, work productively, and contribute to their communities. It also supports resilience and the ability to cope with the challenges and stresses of daily life. Poor mental health, on the other hand, can lead to difficulties in managing emotions, forming relationships, and maintaining a sense of balance, which can affect overall well-being and daily functioning.

Prioritizing mental health is essential because it affects not only an individual’s quality of life but also their relationships, performance in school or work, and ability to engage in meaningful activities. By promoting mental health, individuals can experience better emotional stability, increased resilience, and improved physical health, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life.

Peer Helpers

What is a Peer Helper?

The Peer Helper program is a select group of students who represent their grade levels and schools, providing support to their peers while serving as positive role models. This program spans grades 5 through 12 district-wide and is designed as both a prevention and support initiative that promotes positivity and teaches students the importance of advocating for one another.

As part of the program, students receive a curriculum that covers essential topics such as bullying prevention, substance abuse awareness, mental health, and more. Additionally, Peer Helpers organize campaigns throughout the school year to raise awareness and spread positive messages, such as Red Ribbon Week and Kindness Week.

To become a Peer Helper, students must complete an application process and participate in interviews conducted by their designated coordinator at the start of each school year. If your child is interested in joining the program, please encourage them to apply.
